A little over 100 years ago, a man named Robert Adams invented a scale to measure swing-weight, and called it the Lorythmic Scale. It consisted of a 14” fulcrum on which a club was balanced. The amount of head-weight necessary to balance the club was measured on a scale concocted by Mr. Smith, running from A-1 to F-9. That method of determining swing-weight has been the primary method of “feel-matching” clubs ever since, with most men’s clubs measuring somewhere between D-0 and D-5 from the factory.
But here’s the problem with that method: Every club in your bag is a different length and overall weight, yet they are all made to balance on the same 14” fulcrum. That method virtually guarantees your clubs will feel different during the swing. With the same swing-weight, the longer clubs will “feel” heavier than the shorter clubs when swung.
About a decade ago golfers became increasingly aware of a better method of measuring the “swing-feel” of their clubs - matching their Moments of Inertia (MOI). MOI is the precise measurement of the amount of effort used to move the club. If all the clubs have the same MOI, they will feel identical when swung, regardless of the length or overall weight, because they will all require exactly the same effort to swing.
The Club Coach has been matching clubs by MOI for years. We start by measuring the MOI of a club you might refer to as your “money” club - one that inspires confidence and produces consistent results. We then will re-weight or rebuild your clubs to match the MOI of your money club. It’s amazing how much more confident you will be when all your clubs are money clubs!
